Competition—isn’t it Great

November 11, 2004

Right on the heals of MSN’s new search Google announces that they have nearly doubled their index. It is good to know what your competition is doing and a strategize a a plan.

MSN new search tool is designed to compete directly with google. A new feature, the “near me” search is something different—searching around your geographical location. I am not too impressed yet to switch, nor do I think anyone else will. MSN only indexes 5 billion documents, more than 3 billion less than Google. Competition is fun to watch sometimes, and thought I would share what could be the beginning of the ‘Search Engine Wars’.

The browser wars are most interestingly, but this could distract a little :D

I just realized that it's probably been months since I've been to the actual Google.com main page. I always use either Firefox's search toolbar or take advantage of the fact that it does an "I'm feeling lucky!" search if I just type something into the address bar. I use it on Amazon and IMDB all the time. (ie. "amazon halo")

"MSN only indexes 5 billion documents" (emphasis mine)

Wow -- that really puts things into perspective! Search has really come a long way.

But, yeah, I would never use MSN search over Google. Google has just done such a great job!

I also rarely visit the google homepage. Usually I read their blog from bloglines (and often actually just visit their site to read it though). I saw this though on their blog.
